Forests in the North East

forests

CarbonNeutral Newcastle has formed partnerships with North East Community Forests, part ofthe Community Forest Partnerships, and Newcastle city forestry rangers. We are working together to deliver urban, economic and social regeneration in the city and Newcastle area.

As trees grow, they produce something useful, oxygen and wood. They also create important wildlife areas, improve biodiversity and provide amenity space for local people to enjoy. Our shared vision with the Community Forests, is creating high-quality environments for leisure and recreation by revitalising derelict land and enhancing biodiversity.

We support only well planted and maintained, natural woodland - apply for a grant here.

We are supporting four forests in Newcastle, Kenton Dene, Newburn, Hadrian's Way and Three Hills. Hardy trees to ensure resilience and long-term public amenity.

We are also planting in three community forests in the region:

Bulmer Forest Park

Bulmer Forest Park, East Durham: this 200 acre forest is becoming a major resource for local people and wildlife. It is being planted with indigenous trees associated with the area, a predominance of Ash and Oak. To encourage biodiversity there will be a significant component of attractive shrubs, including Hazel and Mountain Ash.

Ouston Moor

Briar Wood and Redmarshall Oak Wood, Ouston Moor, near Stockton on Tees: these forests were named by pupils from Bishopton Primary School and Redmarshall Primary School. The new woodlands cover 40 acres and will provide a local amenity, with access to bridleways and footpaths.

Merrybent

Merrybent Wood, near Darlington. This is a new woodland on a highly visible area near two roads, helping the neighboring villages. The new woodland is being designed with strong community input, providing a local resource for local people. The planting will include many indigenous trees and shrubs, including the rare Black Poplar tree, benefiting biodiversity and wildlife. The new woodland will cover 30 acres.
