Impacts on the North East

Flooding would also seriously affect the North East as millions of gallons of extra water overwhelm rivers, such as the Tyne.

Devastating flooding meant water mains were ripped out of the ground in Hexham in January 2005. It left residents without fresh water supplies and rationed bottled water was handed out as emergency work was carried out to reinstate the mains.

COOL BRRRITANIA!

Flooding is not the only impact of climate change. Despite temperatures increasing, the UK could end up massively colder.

That's because The Gulf Stream currents that give Britain its mild climate are dramatically weakening. Known as the Atlantic Ocean "conveyor belt", the currents carry warm water north from the tropics, but this has weakened by 30 per cent in just 12 years, scientists revealed in November 2005.

The findings, from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, give the strongest indication yet that the Europe's central heating system is breaking down under the impact of global warming. It would mean the UK would have temperatures as cold as Canada's!
