Save Energy

Save Energy

Whatever your type of business, by far the largest proportion of your emissions will be due to:

Electricity Use: this can be huge for large industrial sites, but even for the smallest businesses heating, lighting and air-conditioning typically accounts for 50% of your emissions.

Fuel Use: Whether for heating or powering our cars, we generate significant amounts of emissions through direct combustion of fossil fuels.

Have you thought about switching to a renewable electricity supply? - it's the easiest way to reduce the carbon impact of your energy use to ZERO. For more information about renewable energy, look at the renewable energy page.

In some countries, there are also tax breaks for using renewable energy sources. In the UK, businesses which can demonstrate they are using renewable energy are also subject to a reduction in their Climate Change Levy payments.

We have put together a basic checklist for measures which can be taken to reduce emissions, conserve energy and promote a more environmentally aware ethos within your company.

SCOTTISHPOWER'S TOP FIVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY TIPS

Our partner, ScottishPower, has put together a basic checklist for measures which can be taken to reduce emissions, conserve energy and promote a more environmentally aware ethos within your company.

  • 1. Label switches and encourage staff to turn lights off after use.
  • 2. Heating costs rise by around 8% for each 1C of overheating. Check thermostat settings regularly. The recommended heating level for shops, restaurants and offices is 19C.
  • 3. Office lighting typically costs around £3 a square metre annually. Energy efficiency could help cut annual heating bills by two thirds.
  • 4. The average photocopier will cost you 21p a night to leave on standby. This adds up to around £75 per year which could be saved by turning it off.
  • 5. A typical computer uses around £90 per year in energy if left on constantly. Turning it off at night saves two thirds of energy.

Grants and funding are available for many energy efficiency measures. For further information about ScottishPower visit www.scottishpower.co.uk/business or call 0800 027 1002
